On Dodo Birds and the Titus 2 Woman

Okay, so my title is a bit of hyperbole. Dodo birds are entirely extinct; Titus 2 women are not. But I don’t think my comparison is invalid.

If, as you read this, you are thinking, “What are you talking about, Brandi? I am surrounded by biblically literate, godly, mature women who delight in helping other women grow in the Lord!” Then bless the name of your Father in heaven (James 1:16-17); you, and they, are rarities.

Recently, my friend Joy and I were talking about the fads that have swept the church over the years, some of which captured our attention for a time, much to our sadness now. Her eyes filled with tears as she said to me, “I would have given anything for just one woman to help me to walk me through some of those things!” I nodded emphatically. Me, too.

Though None Go With Me

For the first twenty-plus years of my Christian walk, I had no mentor. Thankfully, that has recently changed for me. How about you? Has God ordained that you more or less walk alone, from a human standpoint, during this season of your life? My heart goes out to you. How are you responding to this difficulty the Lord has brought you? Will you comment below if you need support and prayer from the women here?

To some degree, you will have to be willing, like Joshua, to decide to serve the Lord, whether or not anyone else around you does (Joshua 24:15). You have the Word and the Spirit, as well as access to an unprecedented amount of excellent teaching online. Are you availing yourself of the resources at your disposal?

What Else Can I Do?

Pray — Do you continue to ask God to bring you a body of solid believers, and specifically some women to practice the “one anothers” with? You have a Father who delights in giving good gifts to His children, and it pleases Him when we ask Him for those gifts! Pray also for the Lord to mature you and conform you to the image of His Son (Colossians 1:9-14). Apart from Him, you can do nothing (John 15:5). If you can’t find a Titus 2 woman, will you ask God to make you into one?

Study — Immerse yourself in the Word. Get some good commentaries. Read excellent books; in fact, read over your head! The wisdom of the Scriptures is inexhaustible. Make it your life’s mission to be mastered by it. Find a good online community to help sharpen you. I recommend this site and www.rickthomas.net.

Obey — Don’t be a hearer of the Word only, be a doer as well (James 1:23). Jesus said if we love Him, we will keep His commandments (John 14:15). Ask the Spirit to help you obey your Lord.

Pour Into Others — Wouldn’t it be a tremendous privilege if God would condescend to allow you to be to another woman what no one was to you? As you study and seek to be mastered by the Word, don’t forget about the woman at the well in John 4. She didn’t wait until she had a Master’s in theology to begin telling others about what Jesus had done for her. I am willing to bet there is someone else just like you nearby who needs a godly friend. Will you serve her?
