One of my favorite hymns is Holy Holy Holy. Though humans are so limited for words that adequately describe God, I believe ‘holy’ is the most complete adjective we have. Because He is holy, God deserves first place in everything, such as beginning each day in the Holy Scriptures and prayer. Christians who walk this truth, that God is holy, have a better understanding of who God is and I believe, may have a closer walk with his/her Creator.
“There is none holy like the LORD: for there is none besides You; there is no rock like our God”(1Samuel 2:2 ESV). Lifting our Creator above everything else places us in a position God wants and where we belong. One main reason we exist is to praise God for who He is–HOLY. The praise we give God is a testimony of His grace and mercy.
The words ‘holy’ and ‘sanctify’ have the same root. When we are sanctified as Christians we are set apart. This sanctification is described in 1 Thessalonians 4:7 “For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness.” Holiness is our calling as His children and His work in us, to make us like Christ because He is holy (Romans 8:28-30). “…You shall be holy for I AM HOLY”(I Peter 1:16).
Holiness is the umbrella under which all that God is and does rests, and nothing that He is or does can ever exist outside that umbrella. “…Who is like You…O LORD? Who is like YOU, majestic in holiness, Awesome in praises, working wonders?”(Ex. 15:11). “…Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of hosts, The whole earth is full of His glory”(Is. 6:3). Praise HIS HOLY NAME!
