When the Supreme Court made their decision to redefine marriage, the LGBT movement quickly organized “Gay Pride” marches in various cities in the U.S. We know homosexuality is a sin (Romans 1:26-32; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10), but it is the only sin so widely celebrated in today’s culture. We don’t see “Thief Pride” or “Disobedient to Parents Pride” or “Greed and Swindler Pride.” Homosexuality is the only sin which people take to the streets to support.
Admittedly, those who practice heterosexual fornication also glory in their debauchery — from Hollywood to high school. What makes the supporters of the homosexual agenda different from all others in social movements, however, is the way in which they display themselves publicly and the militant fashion in which they attack those who see things differently. The homosexual community wants to display its pride…and when you think about it, “Gay Pride” is the perfect title for this movement.
Pride is an issue of the heart; it is the result of the fall of mankind. While God’s attributes are infinite and set apart because of His holiness, the sin of pride is rooted in every sin. Theft, adultery, murder, covetousness — all of these are rooted in the idea that an individual’s wants are more important than the welfare of others. This is pride. While the destructive ramifications radiate from the act, the prideful simply do not care. Why is “Gay Pride” the perfect term for the homosexual agenda? Here are four reasons why.
1. Pride Makes One Desire to be God
“You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High’” (Isaiah 14:13, 14).
The sin of pride results in an attempt to usurp God from His rightful place of authority in order to set up one’s self in His place. Pride causes us to think that we know better than God, that our way is the right way. The prideful shake their fists at God and demand Him to be something and someone He is not and never will be — a servant who takes orders from someone else. Those who support “Gay Pride” demonstrate this attitude when they deny His existence or falsely claim His approval of their lifestyle.
2. Pride Makes One Deny the Word of God
Both the Old and New Testaments present clear teachings on the sin of homosexuality. Those who promote “Gay Pride” deny these teachings by claiming the words of Scripture do not mean what they say. I’ve heard the argument that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed, not for the wickedness (including homosexuality which was prominently displayed by the people), but because of the people’s inhospitality to strangers. I’ve heard the argument that Jesus did not preach on homosexuality, therefore He was not against it. Jesus did preach on sexual immorality, which includes homosexuality. He addressed the issue of the heart and the works which result from it, not just the acts themselves. In other words, He dealt with both the orientation to sin and the results of those orientations if they are conceived into actions – including sexual sins.
3. Pride Makes One Distort the Will of God
The intent of God was (and still is) that marriage is between one man and one woman. By their joining they would become one flesh — both spiritually and physically. Those in the “Gay Pride” movement are described in Romans 1:26, 27 as women who “exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature” and men who “gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another.” Homosexuality usurps God’s natural order, His will, and can in no way be sanctioned by Him, nor by those who claim to follow Him. One cannot ask God’s blessing on a sin, nor advocate an act which is diametrically opposed to His will, but this is exactly what is happening in streets all over the country.
4. Pride Makes One Deny the Judgment of God
Have you ever wondered why the symbol of the homosexual community is a rainbow? We all love rainbows, don’t we? They are always spectacular sights. But now that symbol has been hijacked by the LGBT community. It’s no longer an innocent symbol seen in children’s rooms, cartoons, or on a box of cereal. The rainbow means something else.
Originally, the rainbow was given by God to indicate to Noah that He would not judge the world again by flood. He did not say He would not judge the world again, only that He would not do so with water. The homosexual movement has taken this symbol of “non-judgment” and made it their own. Do an internet search on “pride” and you’ll see. Yet, the Word of God is clear that homosexuals, and all those outside of Christ, will not inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9-10) and that they are condemned already (John 3:17). Denying God’s judgment will not change His mind or His will. Denying the truth only makes reality harder to face.
When the Supreme Court decision came down, the homosexual community and its advocates had a saying: “Love wins.” God is love, and love does win in the end (read the end of Revelation). But what the LGBT community is celebrating is not love. Instead, they are celebrating sin and their own destruction, and this is what makes their jubilation so pitiful. “Gay Pride” is a dreadfully perfect term for “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18).
